This Day in C.S. Lewis History: March 6 and March 8

In 1924 Jack is looking for work, trying to finish Dymer, and gets out-maneuvered big time in a chess match

Welcome to another episode of This Day in C.S. Lewis History. Last month on March 6 and March 8, we hit the 100-year anniversary of two key events in Jack’s journey from atheism to theism to Christianity. These events were part of a great chess match between Jack and a very formidable player. In short, Jack lost two key pieces in the chess match.

Many people know that Jack was an avid reader. But he was not the most careful reader. As a young atheist in 1924, Jack let his guard down and allowed himself to read a few books by some very dangerous authors. Not realizing the danger he was opening himself up to, G.K. Chesterton scored a direct hit on one of the walls protecting Jack’s atheism. In Life of St. Francis, Chesterton said “there is only one intelligent reason why a man does not believe in miracles and that is that he does believe in materialism.”

Enjoy the episode and let me know in the comments what other C.S. Lewis topics would be interesting to you. I generally try to align the current month with the month that events took place. But I am flexible.
